Can I Still Love? / By Han Keyou (Hanshan)

I wish I could hide myself away,
buried beneath a glacier
at fifty degrees below—
then I would no longer tremble,
and in this lifetime,
I would never cross paths with you.

The most beautiful encounter
is a meeting from a former life.
Even without a promised return,
I still long
to rest within your gentle, flowing tenderness.

A fragment of writing
is like pebbles tossed
into the depths of my heart,
stirring up raging waves—
or like a helpless sigh
from the deepest place within.

Can I still love,
when the world before me grows blurred,
and the seasons once again
enter winter’s chill?
What can I do?
Cry out into the wilderness,
or hide in a remote corner
and flee?

If I could choose to hate,
I would never forgive myself—
for letting love slip
through my fingers, again and again;
for leaving wounds
that never fully heal.

Always wandering
in the depths of my heart,
hesitating
between love and hate;
always mourning the past
in moments of happiness,
and remembering to cherish
only when despair descends.

Once more I knock
upon the door of my heart—
no matter who stands outside,
who remains within,
or what is being mourned,
or where I wander.

If I could have it once again,
I would walk with love
to the ends of the earth,
through endless time.
Let others remember,
let them honor
the most beautiful return
in the long years past.
