蒙特雷 Hotel Ancira(今称 Gamma Monterrey Gran Hotel Ancira) 1912年修建,距今已有113年的历史,它坐落于墨西哥蒙特雷市中心,建筑风格典雅,融合法式古典元素与现代设施。

(Although you cannot stay with me all the time, you will be in my heart forever),

Poetry is Universal — A Travelogue of the 44th World Poets’ Congress

The 44th World Poets’ Congress was held in Monterrey, Mexico, from September 21 to 26, 2025. As head of the delegation, along with Deputy Head Peng Nanlin and Advisor Peng Dan, I led fellow poets from the North American delegation (US, Canada, and UK) to attend this grand event. The five-day conference and field trip in Monterrey was incredibly rewarding and deeply moving. Since returning, I’ve been wanting to write a travelogue, but with so much on my plate, I haven’t gotten around to it until today.

The World Poets’ Congress was founded in 1969 to promote the development of poetry and global cultural exchange. Held every one to two years in a different country, the congress brings together poets, scholars, and cultural figures from around the world to discuss the value and mission of poetry. It serves not only as a platform for poets to share their creations and ideas, but also as an important bridge for promoting cultural exchange and fostering friendship among nations. It is hailed as one of the most influential international poetry events.

The 44th World Poetry Congress was grandly held in Monterrey, Mexico. More than 120 poets from more than 20 countries attended the congress. Among them, the North American delegation and the Chinese delegation had 36 people, almost accounting for one-third of the delegates. The lineup was strong enough. Monterrey (Spanish: Monterrey) is the capital of Nuevo León, Mexico. It is the third largest city in the country and the economic center of the northeast, with a population of about 4.1 million. It is known as the “Queen of the North”, “Giant of the Northeast”, “City of Mountains”, and “Capital of the North”. The city is surrounded by the Eastern Sierra Madre Mountains. The dry riverbed of the Santa Catalina River runs through the city. It has natural landscapes and cultural tourist attractions such as the Garcia Cave and the Horsetail Falls. It is known as the most Americanized city in Mexico. Monterrey was founded in 1596 and has developed into an industrial center. The city has a semi-arid climate, with an average daily temperature of over 30℃ in summer and occasional sub-zero temperatures in winter. [3][5] Some matches of the 2026 World Cup will be held here. As an important industrial and commercial center in Mexico, Monterrey is home to the headquarters of multinational companies such as Cemex and FEMSA, and has undertaken investment projects such as Tesla’s Gigafactory. Its leading industries include automobile, home appliance and aerospace parts manufacturing, and its per capita GDP ranks first in the country. The Monterrey Industrial Park has attracted a large number of Chinese companies, and Highway 85 carries approximately 80% of freight trade with the United States.

“September in Monterrey is surrounded by mountains, with winding rivers and sunlight casting a golden glow on the ancient stone plaza. It is in this land steeped in history and passion that the 44th World Poetry Congress is held with great fanfare.”

Mexico, a land rich in poets, has successfully hosted the World Poetry Congress for the fourth time. Past presidents of the congress include Sonia Garza, Manuel Salvador Leyva, María Eugenia Soberanis, and María del Pilar Martínez.

This is a grand gathering that transcends borders and languages, a gathering where poetry breathes life and words embrace. Since its founding in 1969, the World Poetry Congress has become one of the brightest stars in the poetry world, rising every one to two years in different countries, building a bridge of communication and a stage for poets to express their hearts.

From September 21 to 26, 2025, Monterrey welcomed over 120 poets from 24 countries—from Mexico to China, Hungary to South Africa, France to New Zealand—where the flames of poetry intertwined into light. On the evening of the 21st, a welcome ceremony for the Congress was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, presided over by Lic. Silvia Nancy García, Director of the Monterrey Municipal Government’s Tourism and Culture Bureau. This unique venue welcomed guests with music, folklore, and Monterrey culture, marking the beginning of the Congress. The ancient architecture seemed to whisper of the past, while on the stage, the President and Executive Chairman of the World Poetry Congress delivered speeches, welcoming friends from all over the world.

On the morning of the 22nd, the doors of the Monterrey Museum of Contemporary Art slowly opened. Its geometric facade seemed to suggest the infinite possibilities of poetry. The opening ceremony took place at the Museo MARCO. Nuevo León State Minister of Tourism, Maricarmen Martínez, delivered the opening address. Guests included María Eugenia Soberanis, President of the World Congress of Poets; María del Pilar Martínez Nandín, President of the 44th Congress; representatives from the Ministry of Culture; officials from the Monterrey Convention and Visitors Bureau; leaders from the Municipal Tourism and Culture Office; and representatives from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. This was followed by a series of intellectual discussions: Dr. Elsa Cross spoke on “The Poet and Wisdom of Alfonso Reyes,” and Spanish scholar Dr. María Antonia García de León Álvarez spoke on “Logos, Beauty, and Poetry.” The power of language has been reawakened, as if reminding people that poetry is not just words, but a vessel for the human soul. This event was truly a major event for the Southern California literary community.

The next morning, we departed for Monterrey, Mexico.

The poets stayed at the Hotel Ancira in Monterey. Built in 1912, the Monterrey Hotel Ancira (now known as the Gamma Monterrey Gran Hotel Ancira) boasts a 113-year history. Located in the heart of Monterrey, Mexico, it boasts an elegant architectural style that blends classical French elements with modern amenities. Designated an artistic monument by Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and History in 1992, the hotel holds exceptional cultural and historical value.

On the evening of our arrival, the organizers held a welcome reception at the Monterrey National Metropolitan Museum (Municipal Government Museo Metropolitano). This former city hall, now the National Metropolitan Museum, served as the city hall and the civic and judicial offices during the colonial era. Even at night, the building’s historical and cultural atmosphere was palpable. The two-story courtyard centered around a small plaza, where the entire welcome reception was held. Small tables were set up on the second-floor corridor, where everyone enjoyed a variety of Spanish-style music and dance while sipping wine.

Dr. María Eugenia Soberanis N., President of the World Congress of Poets, María del Pilar Martínez Nandín, Executive President of the 44th Congress, and the Executive Director of the organizing committee each took the stage to welcome poets from around the world. A lighthearted and cheerful Mexican dance performance and vocal performances created a lighthearted and cheerful atmosphere for the evening, allowing us to experience the warmth and kindness of the Mexican people up close for the first time.

On the morning of the 22nd, a grand opening ceremony was held at the Contemporary Art Museum MARCO. Built in 1991 and designed by renowned architect Ricardo Legorreta, the museum is located on the edge of Plaza Mayor in the city center, boasting a vibrant exterior with striking geometric forms and vibrant colors. In the afternoon, Dr. Elsa Cross delivered a keynote address, “The Poets of Alfonso Reyes: Gift and Wisdom.” Dr. María Antonia García de León Álvarez of Spain delivered a keynote address, “Logos, Beauty, Poetry (The Value of Language)” (Perlas Hall). A posthumous tribute was given to Dr. Manuel S. Leyva Martínez (Perlas Hall). The art exhibition “Poetry and Light” opened in the Monterrey Hall. Poets from various countries also presented their works in Spanish, English, and Chinese.

On the 23rd, the poetry collection was released: “Black Island” – Dr. Elsa Cross, Professor Eduardo Sambrano, Mr. Armando Fuentes Aguirre (“Cartoon”), the new book “The Journey of a Versatile Writer” was released, + a visit to the art exhibition “Poetry and Light”, Miriam García Calomero’s “Latin American Poetry (Burning Volcano)”, Dr. Maria Antonia García de León Álvarez’s “Nine Symbols of Lorca”. Poets from various countries opened their hearts in various lecture halls, exchanged and learned from each other, and indeed felt the strong diversity and richness of world poetry. It is like a beautiful and romantic forest of poetry that provides spiritual nourishment to the world, and poets are the brightest stars in this deep forest.

The 44th Congress Poetry Selection and the “Flame” Magazine Launch (Pearl Hall). After lunch, the organizers arranged a city tour, the first stop being the former site of the Monterrey Steel Plant.

The steel plant, founded and produced here over a century ago, is surprisingly large, rivaling even some of China’s most famous steel mills. Following our guide’s instructions, we boarded the elevator used to transport iron ore over a century ago, climbed to the top of the blast furnace, and then returned to the steelmaking workshop on the second floor. We watched the entire steelmaking process through a video with audio. This not only taught us about the subject but also allowed us to experience the awe and wonder of the birth of steel.

From the observation deck atop the blast furnace, nearly 100 meters above the ground, I finally had a clear view of Monterrey. Like most European and American cities, it had few skyscrapers, but was relatively clean and tidy, with wide, flat roads and abundant green space. This significantly changed my impression of Mexico. Although I had visited Mexico before, it was only in the cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, near the US border, where drug smuggling and gang activity loomed large. Public security was extremely poor. In Monterrey, however, I saw a vibrant scene, with tall buildings brimming with energy. Around Monte Bishop and at the foot of the Sierra Madre, clusters of European-style buildings nestled in greenery, like countless children nestled in the arms of their mother, a scene of tranquility and peace.

On the way from the airport into the city, I noticed that almost all the roads and houses surrounded a single, towering peak. Its shape and imposing presence were unlike any other. I told Yifei, who had arrived on the same flight, “This mountain must be the sacred mountain of Monterrey.” From the steel mill building, I asked the tour guide, who told me it was Monte Bishop. The other mountain on the north shore was Monte Bishop, once the official residence of Bishop Rafael, and now houses the diocesan museum, as it was

site of a crucial battle during the American invasion in 1846.

But only then did I realize there was an even more majestic mountain range to the right: the Sierra Madre.

After the various poetry exchange activities, a grand awards ceremony and closing ceremony were held at the Mexican History Museum that evening. After the various awards ceremony, the president specially invited the North American delegation to the stage to deliver speeches and hold a certificate presentation ceremony.

This was a very interesting plan. As neighbors of Mexico, and this was the first time the North American delegation was attending the World Poetry Conference, we should always express our respect for the conference. As presidents of the World Chinese Poetry Society, we sincerely hoped to invite a world-renowned poet to serve as honorary president. This would not only enhance the society’s influence but also provide a broad platform for Chinese poets to broaden their horizons. So I proposed this idea to Deputy Head of the delegation, Nan Lin.

Nan Lin, a highly humble, down-to-earth, and capable senior overseas Chinese cultural leader, immediately implemented the plan and produced the honorary certificates and letters of appreciation at his own expense. Upon arriving in Monterrey, President Maria informed him that our event would be scheduled for the last day. I told Nan Lin that the last day would also be the most formal and grand occasion. Sure enough, we were scheduled after the awards ceremony.

Vice President Nan Lin took the stage first, inviting me to the podium to deliver a speech: “I am deeply honored to be able to lead the North American Poetry Delegation to attend the 44th World Poetry Congress, along with Peng Dan and Nan Lin, to witness the grand occasion of the Congress firsthand and to exchange and learn with outstanding poets from around the world. I thank Ms. Maria, President of the World Poetry Congress, for accepting the invitation to serve as Honorary President of the World Chinese Poetry Society. I would also like to present a Certificate of Appreciation, a Certificate of Honor, and a Letter of Congratulations to Ms. Maria, Executive President of this Congress, for her outstanding contributions.” Consultant Peng Dan then took the stage and welcomed everyone to Los Angeles, USA. Then, President Maria and the Executive President took the stage. I presented President Maria with the Certificate of Honorary President of the World Chinese Poetry Society, and Peng Dan presented the Executive President with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Voice of American Culture.

Following the arrangement agreed upon beforehand, the North American delegation took turns ascending the podium and posed for photos with President Maria and the Executive Chairman.

At the Farewell farewell dinner, organizers invited local artists from Monterrey, Mexico, to perform traditional Mexican music and the song “Santa Lucia.” Nan Lin, a Chinese-American writer, actor, and bilingual host from North America, sang the Chinese pop song “Old Love Song,” translating the last line, “Although you cannot stay with me all the time, you will be in my heart forever,” into English to enthusiastic applause. Following the singing and music, enthusiastic poets took to the stage and danced, promising to meet again next year.

Participating in the World Poets Congress holds significant cultural and social significance. It not only provides poets with an international platform to showcase their unique creative styles and ideas, but also allows poetry from different languages, nationalities, and cultures to inspire each other through dialogue and exchange. By interacting with poets from around the world, participants can broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of the diversity of poetry. At the same time, the conference also emphasized the role of poetry in promoting peace, enhancing understanding and conveying common human emotions, making poetry a bridge connecting the world,

Postscript:
“The World Poets Congress is not only a literary celebration, but also a dialogue among civilizations. It allows poems in different languages to illuminate each other and the souls of different cultures to resonate with each other. It reminds us that poetry is not merely lyrical text; it is also a bridge that promotes peace, conveys understanding, and carries the common emotions of humanity” (excerpted from Nan Linwen in the Greater Bay Area Times). I am deeply honored to lead a delegation to the 44th World Poets Congress, and I have learned a lot. I have always advocated that “poetry is not confined to any one region, country, or circle; it is universal.” As a poet, I must strive to integrate my work into the world poetry community. Just like music, although there are differences in language and script, the spiritual realm and artistic charm it embodies are universal. Through this fusion, the human soul can be purified and sublimated. Regardless of race, skin color, faith, or wealth, a strong

resonance will emerge, thus achieving a high degree of harmony in thought and emotion. No matter where it is, poetry is like flowing water from a mountain peak, like the finest spring music. Poets are among the most respected people in the world. As I often reflect on myself, “Only those who dare to love and hate can compose inspiring words; only those with pure souls can write poems that move people to tears.” I thank the organizers of the World Poets Conference and the poets who participated. I bless poetry and poets. Let us cultivate together in the temple of poetry, care for each other, and reap the fruits of our labor. I believe that such a harvest is God’s greatest gift.
