My Mellow Girl
To my younger daughter who came to see me and spent the night with me.

A cledon vase,
A colored vase,
Not allowed to be peeped into.
-Two hearts.

You poured secrets of your heart into mine,
My heart became heavy,
As yours became light,
Watching you in slumber, I stayed awake for the dawn.
A blooming flower, who will be there to smell?
A ripe cherry, who will be there to pick?
A girl with fragrance floating, who will be there to marry?
So sweet a girl, you had better leave quickly

My lovely girl is about to go afar,
Like a white cloud floating away,
My eyes will follow her, like strings of light.
My feeling will flood her, like the blue sky,
My blessing will guard her, forever sweet,
My soul will touch hers, no matter how far away,
My evaporating tears will moisten her, full of freshness,
My trust will go with her, happiness awaits.

KARAKORUM AND ORCHID CACTUS

September snow scatters over Karakorum,
the Ancient Capital of Magnolia.
From here, Kublai Khan galloped out steppes,
found his Great Capital of Yuan Dynasty, now Beijing.
800 years ago, was Kublai’s grandfather, Genghis Khan
created the Empire Mongolia and it’s capital of Karakorum
led his cavalrymen swept over Asian-euro continent
But tonight, who are they
under a moon so big and round in Karakorum,
dancing piously around a bonfire in front of our guest
mansio?
Among moonlight covered Gobi sands, steppes wilderness
and old monasteries of Karakorum,
Whom could I ask whether my budding orchid cactus
is now in bloom at home in Beijing?
Oh, my orchid fairy, are you choosing to enjoy tonight,
the moonlit Ghost Festival there
in this mid of the repeated seventh lunar month, a leap month,
Rather than to celebrate the mid of eighth lunar month,
the Mid-autumn Festival?
No matter how, the moon is shining,
round, bright, and serene, world over.
Blessed by the moon of Karakorum, I still miss
my orchid cactus in Beijing, while far away from her.
In this ancient home, rebuilt ruins of the Khans,
It seems I can see, touch, and feel
How their mobile armies, carrying bows and arrows,
conquer from East to West on horse backs.
When curtains lowered for the Congress of World Poets
Mongolia,
An aircraft returned me southward home.
Waiting for me is there my orchid cactus
with her head bending low.
Slender petals all closed in, yellow shade paled as the waning
moon,
my flower, you, became a jade pin quietly resting at a lady’s
hair.
Or became a dewdrop created by a master calligraphers tinted
brush

In a downward stroke ended with its tip.
A broad long leave on which you hang serves as your ceiling,
and doubtless as your silky sky.
Enjoying a free world of yourself,
despite how immense the cosmos could be.
Knowing nothing of death, a flower of eternity?
You remain in leisure and carefree.

Have you ever seen an orchid cactus in bloom?
a question from me afar for Karakorum.
Do you know the life story of the flower?
a merely blink existence but so peaceful.
While she came, as if rooted in a secluded valley,
did not have a chance to see you or any others.
Only showed her smile once in deep of the night,
quietly she vanished into eternity.
Who could be a deity
that stays any time and every where?

Fang Gu Yian, Beijing

Left Beijing on September 1 st to participate a conference in Magnolia. Obliged to visit Karakorum in the steppes and Gobi from Ulaanbaatar. Written in the feeling of weight of history after ten day’s tour.
